Several Employees Are Losing Their Jobs After Posting Inappropriate Comments and Celebratory Reactions Online in Response to the Death of a Public Figure, Highlighting How Social Media Behavior Can Have Serious Professional Consequences and Impact Personal and Career Reputations

The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10 has sparked a nationwide backlash that extends well beyond politics. While many mourned Kirk’s death—including public figures across party lines—a wave of social media outrage has followed, leading to firings and public condemnation of individuals accused of making insensitive or celebratory remarks online. The response highlights the complex intersection of political discourse, online behavior, and accountability in today’s hyper-connected society.

Among the earliest figures to face criticism was author Stephen King, who posted online that Kirk had “advocated stoning gays to death” in response to claims that Kirk wasn’t a polarizing figure. After Elon Musk publicly called King a “liar,” the author deleted his post and issued an apology. Nevertheless, the comment marked the beginning of a broader online debate over appropriate ways to respond to political violence and the boundaries of free speech in digital spaces.

A controversial website, Expose Charlie’s Murderers, has emerged in the aftermath, naming employees, students, and public figures who appeared to support “political violence” based on their online posts. The site includes names, employers, and social media profiles, and several individuals listed have reportedly lost their jobs as a result. Critics argue that the platform promotes vigilantism, while supporters claim it serves as a form of accountability for harmful online rhetoric.

High-profile terminations quickly followed. Political analyst Matthew Dowd was fired from MSNBC after calling Kirk one of the “most divisive” public figures and suggesting he had contributed to an environment that led to his own death. MSNBC labeled Dowd’s remarks “insensitive and unacceptable,” underscoring the growing tension between personal expression and professional consequences in politically charged environments.

Other organizations also acted swiftly. DC Comics canceled a Red Hood series written by Gretchen Felker-Martin, who had appeared to mock Kirk’s death. Similarly, Middle Tennessee State University, the Carolina Panthers, and Nasdaq confirmed the dismissal of employees who posted dismissive or celebratory comments about the assassination on social media. The rapid spread of consequences highlights the real-world impact of online behavior and the fine line public figures and employees must navigate in their digital communications.

The backlash continues to escalate. Researcher Parker Thayer estimates that up to 60 individuals may have lost jobs over their online remarks related to Kirk’s death. Public figures including Laura Loomer and Congressman Clay Higgins have called for permanent social media bans for anyone celebrating the assassination, fueling ongoing debates about free speech, accountability, and the limits of cancel culture. As the conversation unfolds, the nation grapples with how to balance expression, ethics, and consequences in an era where online statements carry immediate, tangible repercussions.
