FBI Leadership Shake-Up: Three Senior Officials Dismissed Amid January 6 Probe Disputes

In a major leadership shake-up, the Department of Justice has removed three senior FBI officials connected to the January 6 Capitol riot investigations. Those dismissed include Brian Driscoll, former Acting FBI Director; Steven Jensen, head of the Washington Field Office; and veteran Special Agent Walter Giardina. The simultaneous removals mark what insiders call an unprecedented restructuring within the FBI.

Driscoll confirmed his dismissal in an internal message, expressing pride in his service and regret over his abrupt departure. Sources say he had resisted a DOJ request to release the full list of FBI personnel involved in January 6 cases, citing privacy and operational concerns. Jensen also confirmed his removal, pledging to face the decision with dignity and urging agents to continue serving with integrity.

Walter Giardina’s exit was especially surprising to colleagues. With over 25 years of experience, he was widely respected and had recently been placed in an internal oversight role. His removal added to the perception that these firings were not performance-based but part of a larger shift in the Bureau’s direction.

According to DOJ officials, the dismissals are part of a broader effort to restore public trust, ensure accountability, and address internal resistance and inefficiencies. A senior spokesperson emphasized the importance of professionalism and transparency across all levels of federal law enforcement.

However, critics have raised concerns about potential political motivations. Some former FBI officials and members of Congress warn that abrupt firings during ongoing investigations could impact morale and raise questions about independence. Lawmakers are now calling for more transparency regarding the reasons behind the personnel changes.

With interim replacements expected soon, the FBI enters a period of transition. Whether this shift leads to improved accountability or deepens concerns over political interference remains uncertain—but within the Bureau, change is clearly underway.
