BREAKING: At least 4 people shot near Howard University during Homecoming celebrations

Chaos unfolded near Howard University on Friday night when gunfire erupted along Georgia Avenue NW during the school’s homecoming celebrations. The shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Georgia Avenue, an area filled with students, alumni, and visitors attending one of Washington, D.C.’s major annual events. Authorities confirmed that four people were injured—one critically, one seriously, and two others with less severe wounds. All were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Witnesses described a scene of panic as the sound of rapid gunfire sent crowds scattering. Students and attendees ran for safety as police rushed to the area, closing nearby streets to secure the scene. Law enforcement officers searched for evidence, reviewed security footage, and interviewed witnesses to piece together what happened.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and investigators have not identified any suspects or determined a motive. Authorities believe the incident may have originated from an off-campus gathering associated with homecoming events. The uncertainty has left the community shaken as police continue to collect information.

Howard University officials released a brief statement urging calm and assuring the public that official campus events were not directly affected by the violence. They also announced that additional security measures would be implemented for upcoming activities to ensure the safety of students and guests.

Many students and alumni expressed deep disappointment and sadness online, noting that what should have been a weekend of celebration turned into a distressing event. Several emphasized the need for greater safety measures around the campus area during large gatherings.

The investigation remains active as the Metropolitan Police Department continues to seek tips from the public. Community members are being encouraged to come forward with any information that might assist in identifying those responsible.
