Vice President J.D. Vance Defends Trump’s Tariff Strategy
During a Thursday interview on Newsmax TV with Greg Kelly, Vice President J.D. Vance defended President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy, labeling it a necessary response to what he described as a national emergency concerning U.S. supply chains. Vance argued that foreign governments—some of them adversarial—have threatened to disrupt critical goods, such as pharmaceutical ingredients and essential manufacturing components. He stressed, “If these governments are threatening to cut us off from that stuff, that is, by definition, a national emergency.” This defense came amid a legal battle over Trump’s use of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). While a federal trade court had initially blocked the tariffs, claiming Trump lacked authority, a federal appeals court has temporarily reinstated them as the legal process continues.
Vance emphasized that the president holds significant discretion in handling foreign policy and economic protections during emergencies. He argued that despite legal objections from the courts, the president must act decisively to protect American industries and consumers from unfair trade practices and foreign manipulation. “The president has very broad discretion to fight back, to bring American industry back home, and to make American consumers protected and much safer,” Vance said. He also warned that failing to address these supply chain threats could undermine U.S. resilience and national security. President Trump, on his Truth Social account, echoed these concerns, criticizing the court ruling and calling for the Supreme Court to restore full presidential authority over emergency economic measures.
