Minnesota assassination suspect Vance Boelter allegedly left a handwritten confession blaming Democratic Governor Tim Walz for the fatal shootings of Minnesota legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and for the attempted assassination of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. The letter, addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel and signed “Dr. Vance Luther Boelter,” was discovered in a Buick Boelter purchased hours after the attacks. Authorities launched Minnesota’s largest manhunt, eventually capturing Boelter near his home in Green Isle. Both Senator Hoffman and his wife survived and are recovering. Boelter now faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder.
According to charging documents, Boelter bought the Buick and an e-bike for $900 from an unidentified individual at a Minneapolis bus stop, who later accompanied him to a bank where Boelter withdrew $2,200. Surveillance captured Boelter wearing a cowboy hat—an image the FBI used in public appeals during the manhunt. Additional footage from his Minneapolis residence confirmed his appearance. While Boelter’s letter implicated Governor Walz in a broader ideological grievance, the governor’s name was not listed on a typed “hit list” found with Boelter, which included other Democratic officials and abortion clinics. The case has sparked heightened concerns about political extremism and domestic terrorism.
