Brazil Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 8 in Fiery Mid-Air Tragedy
A devastating hot air balloon accident in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, on June 21, 2025, has left eight people dead and 13 others injured. The balloon, operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, caught fire mid-flight with 21 people on board. According to survivors and authorities, the pilot initiated an emergency descent after a fire ignited inside the basket. In a desperate move, he urged passengers to jump. Thirteen, including the pilot, survived. However, as the basket lightened, the balloon ascended again, trapping and killing the remaining passengers. Witnesses described harrowing scenes of passengers falling from the burning balloon.
Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been caused by a backup burner reigniting or a gas leak triggered by intense ground movement during takeoff. The victims included couples, a mother and daughter, and a professional figure skater. Brazil’s Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) is investigating and expects initial findings within 30 days. Authorities, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Governor Jorginho Mello, have expressed condolences and pledged full support. The balloon operator has suspended operations indefinitely. This incident, following another fatal balloon accident in São Paulo weeks prior, has intensified national scrutiny over Brazil’s ballooning safety regulations. As the country mourns, calls grow louder for reform to ensure such tragedies are not repeated.
