A federal judge is facing new scrutiny after blocking former President Trump’s attempt to end the Biden-era CHNV immigration parole program.
Judge Indira Talwani, appointed by President Obama in 2013, halted efforts to terminate a policy that offers temporary legal status to over 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
Conservatives have questioned Talwani’s impartiality due to her political ties. Records show she volunteered for Democratic campaigns, including those of Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren. In 2012, she accepted an award from the Chinese Progressive Association, a group with alleged links to the Chinese Communist Party.
Talwani’s ruling argued that ending the program would cause family separation. Meanwhile, Trump praised El Salvador’s crime policies and suggested using their prison model to house violent U.S. criminals, calling them “homegrown.”
