From age 65, how often should you shower (and why over-washing can be harmful to your health)

As we grow older, our skin undergoes significant changes. It becomes thinner, drier, and more delicate. Key elements like collagen, elastin, and sebum, which naturally protect and hydrate the skin, decrease with age.

Daily showers, especially hot ones, combined with harsh soaps can strip away this protective barrier. This can lead to dryness, itching, irritation, and increased sensitivity.

Experts now recommend that people over 65 limit showers to about two or three times a week. This balance helps maintain cleanliness without damaging the skin’s natural defenses.

When you do shower, it’s important to use lukewarm water rather than hot water to avoid excessive drying. Hot water can further weaken the skin barrier.

Choosing gentle, moisturizing cleansers instead of harsh soaps can help protect the skin’s natural oils. Look for products designed for sensitive or aging skin.

Keeping showers short—ideally under five minutes—is another way to prevent excessive drying. Long showers can strip away moisture and make skin vulnerable.

After showering, pat your skin dry gently rather than rubbing. Rubbing can irritate fragile skin and increase redness or soreness.

Finally, applying a moisturizer immediately after showering locks in hydration. This is especially critical for mature skin that struggles to retain moisture naturally.

Taking these simple steps is a vital part of self-care as we age. Caring for your skin helps you stay comfortable, healthy, and confident in your appearance.
