California Man Found Guilty of Starting Wildfire That Burned 44,000 Acres

A California man, Justin Halstenberg of Norco, has been found guilty of starting the devastating Line Fire that scorched over 44,000 acres and led to mass evacuations across Southern California in September 2024. His conviction includes seven counts related to this massive wildfire, and two additional charges for an attempted fire that followed shortly after. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the charges include aggravated arson, property damage, and possession of flammable materials. Halstenberg now faces a potential life sentence.

According to the DA’s office, Halstenberg made several attempts to ignite fires within a single hour in the Highland hills near a residential neighborhood. His first attempt was extinguished by firefighters, and his second by a civilian who saw the flames and stomped them out. Unfortunately, his third attempt succeeded. This fire, which began near Baseline Street in Highland, quickly spread out of control, growing into the massive Line Fire that would impact numerous communities.

The fire triggered widespread evacuations across several mountain villages and suburbs including Running Springs, Forest Falls, Arrowbear Lake, Mountain Home Village, Angelus Oaks, and Seven Oaks. Even parts of Highland and San Bernardino were affected. Governor Gavin Newsom responded by declaring a state of emergency for San Bernardino County as the blaze advanced due to high temperatures and dry brush. The rapid spread of the fire placed many lives and homes in danger.

Officials emphasized the danger posed by Halstenberg’s actions. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department praised the court’s decision, stating that it represented a major win for both the affected communities and the brave firefighters who fought to control the wildfire. The destruction caused by the Line Fire included not only environmental damage, but also enormous emotional and financial tolls on residents who were forced to flee their homes.

As the community begins to recover from the damage, Halstenberg’s conviction sends a clear message about the seriousness of arson-related crimes, especially in fire-prone regions. The case highlights the immense risks wildfires pose to lives and property, and the critical need for accountability. Legal proceedings continue as Halstenberg awaits sentencing, with life in prison as a likely outcome.
