A long-married couple is driving together when the wife unexpectedly speaks up. In a calm and clear voice, she tells her husband that she wants a divorce. This catches him off guard, but he remains silent, eyes focused on the road.
Without waiting for a response, she goes further. She tells him not to try and convince her otherwise. Her reason: she has been having an affair with his best friend, who she claims is a much better lover. Her revelation is cold and brutal.
The husband remains expressionless, not uttering a word. Instead, his grip on the steering wheel tightens and the speed of the car slowly increases to 45mph. His silence is unsettling, but she continues her barrage.
She then begins to list what she wants in the divorce. She demands the house and claims it without hesitation. The speed climbs to 55mph. Still, the husband doesn’t speak, but his tension is growing.
She insists on having the car as well. Now they’re up to 60mph. Her demands continue to escalate, and she seems confident, even smug. She wants everything—the house, the car—and she’s about to ask for more.
Next, she adds the bank accounts, all the credit cards, and even the boat. Her greed knows no bounds. The car is now traveling at 65mph, and it begins veering slightly toward a large concrete bridge.
Nervous, the wife finally breaks the rhythm of her monologue to ask a question. “Isn’t there anything you want?” she asks, perhaps expecting another cold silence or a final plea.
At last, the husband speaks. His voice is calm and even. “No, I’ve got everything I need,” he tells her. It’s a cryptic response, and she doesn’t understand what he means.
Puzzled, she presses him. “Oh, really? So what have you got?” she asks, still assuming she’s in control of the situation.
In the final seconds before impact, the husband turns to her with a smile. Just as they’re about to crash into the concrete wall at 65mph, he answers with a single word: “The airbag.”
This darkly ironic ending flips the entire situation. The man, silent and seemingly passive, had his own kind of revenge planned all along.
