One of Copenhagen’s most historic buildings, the Børsen, was engulfed in flames on the morning of July 16, 2024, in what has been called one of Denmark’s most devastating cultural losses.

The fire started around 7:30 a.m., and within minutes, smoke and flames were visible from the heart of the city. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud cracking sound before the building’s distinctive spire collapsed.

The Børsen, also known as the Old Stock Exchange, dates back to the 1600s and is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen. It featured a world-famous dragon-tailed spire symbolizing unity and strength.

At the time of the fire, the building was under renovation, with scaffolding surrounding much of its exterior. Officials suspect that the fire may have originated on the roof, possibly linked to the ongoing construction work.

Danish emergency services responded immediately, deploying more than 100 firefighters to the scene. Cranes, ladders, and water cannons were used to fight the blaze from above and prevent its spread to nearby buildings.

Despite the intense flames, no lives were lost, and all occupants were safely evacuated. However, several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion during the operation.

In a remarkable effort, museum workers, staff, and even passersby rushed into the smoke-filled structure to save irreplaceable artworks and artifacts from the flames. Many paintings and historical documents were recovered.

Still, a large portion of the building was completely destroyed, including its ornate roof, upper floors, and most of the central hall. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen visited the site and expressed her sorrow, stating: “It hurts to see a piece of our history go up in flames. Børsen is not just architecture — it’s a symbol of Denmark.”

Cultural institutions and citizens across Denmark have voiced their support for restoring the Børsen. A national fundraiser has already begun to help preserve what remains and plan for reconstruction.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early signs suggest a technical fault during the renovation. Officials say a full report will be released after thorough analysis.
