Current FBI leadership is investigating allegations that the agency conducted an unauthorized operation to infiltrate Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign using two female undercover agents, as reported on Tuesday. The operation, allegedly ordered by then-FBI Director James Comey in 2015, was revealed by a whistleblower to the House Judiciary Committee.
The whistleblower claims Comey personally directed an off-the-books investigation targeting Trump after his candidacy announcement in June 2015. The agents were reportedly instructed to act as “honeypots” to gather information through romantic or sexual interest.
The operation was separate from the Crossfire Hurricane investigation and lacked proper justification. Current FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino are investigating the agents’ whereabouts. The FBI has yet to comment.
If verified, the allegations could suggest institutional bias against Trump during his 2016 campaign.
