NYPD Officer Killed In Midtown Shooting Was Expecting Third Child

NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was tragically shot and killed Monday while working a second job in Manhattan. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was working private security in uniform when he was shot in the back by a gunman carrying an M4 assault rifle near a midtown office building that houses the NFL and Blackstone.

Islam had been with the NYPD since 2021 and was known as a devoted officer, father, and mentor. “He died as he lived: a hero,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Mayor Eric Adams honored Islam as a man of faith who “loved this city” and protected others until the end.

The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, opened fire in the building lobby around 6:30 p.m., killing four people, including Islam, before taking his own life. Witnesses described a chaotic scene and the sound of rapid gunfire. Tamura, dressed in business attire, was armed with a silencer-equipped rifle and appeared to target the building’s upper floors, including Blackstone’s offices.

Officials are investigating whether the NFL or other entities were specific targets. Videos showed police storming the building while treating victims and securing the scene.

Islam’s death left a deep impact on his community. He worked in the Bronx’s 47th precinct and mentored young Bangladeshi men. “He wanted to leave behind a legacy for his family,” said family friend Marjanul Karim.

The NYPD and city leaders continue to mourn. “Every day he went out to provide for his family,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry. Tributes poured in from fellow officers and local officials, praising Islam’s bravery and sacrifice.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooter’s motive and any possible affiliations.
