Egg prices have skyrocketed due to a recent outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) that affected 18.8 million commercial egg layers in January. This led to a sharp increase in egg prices, with the average price of a dozen eggs reaching $4.95, up from $2.52 last year. In some places, egg cartons cost $10 or more.
In response, some people have resorted to smuggling eggs from Mexico or purchasing backyard chickens. Businesses like Waffle House and Denny’s have added egg surcharges, and stores like Costco are limiting egg purchases. Despite the high prices, chicken prices remain stable as broiler chickens haven’t been impacted by the bird flu as much as egg layers. However, the USDA warns that grocery prices may rise further in 2025.
