‘Zom bie Squirrels’ with oozing flesh terrify

Across the United States, unusual and unsettling images of squirrels have sparked widespread alarm, leading to sensational descriptions such as “zombie squirrels.” The photographs, circulating heavily on social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook, show squirrels with grotesque appearances, including swollen faces, wart-like growths, and oozing sores. Many viewers, shocked by the condition of the animals, have expressed concern and curiosity, with one user posting a photo of a squirrel bearing a large facial mass and asking for explanations.

Experts explain that the disturbing appearance is typically linked to a condition known as squirrel fibromatosis. This disease is caused by a poxvirus that produces large fibrous tumors on the animals’ skin. The tumors often appear around the head and face, making the squirrels look disfigured or “zombie-like.” While not directly harmful to humans, the disease can have severe consequences for the squirrels themselves, limiting their ability to see, eat, and escape predators.

In addition to fibromatosis, other conditions such as mange, caused by mites burrowing into the skin, or secondary bacterial infections in open wounds can worsen the squirrels’ appearance. These combined health issues give the impression of severe deformities and rotting flesh, amplifying the sense of horror for onlookers. Although frightening in appearance, wildlife officials stress that these illnesses are relatively common among squirrels and have long been part of their ecological struggles.

Importantly, wildlife experts emphasize that people and pets are not at risk from these squirrel diseases. The viruses and parasites that afflict squirrels do not typically cross over to humans. Nevertheless, direct contact is strongly discouraged. Handling sick or injured squirrels can add stress to the animal, potentially worsen its condition, and expose humans to parasites like fleas or ticks. Maintaining distance is the safest approach for both parties.

When encountering an afflicted squirrel, authorities recommend observation from afar rather than intervention. If the animal appears unable to function—such as struggling to eat, move, or see—it may be reported to a local wildlife rehabilitation center. These facilities are better equipped to assess whether the squirrel can recover or requires humane care. For the public, avoiding feeding or attempting to capture the animal is strongly advised.

Ultimately, the viral images of so-called “zombie squirrels” highlight how nature can sometimes appear frightening, especially when diseases manifest visibly. While disturbing, these conditions are neither new nor a threat to human health. They serve as a reminder of the challenges wildlife face daily and the importance of respecting their space. The best course of action remains observation, awareness, and contacting professionals when intervention is necessary.
