Sixteen-year-old Bryce Brooks, a high school student from Atlanta, was on vacation with his family in Pensacola, Florida, when a tragic act of heroism unfolded. While enjoying the beach, Bryce and his friends noticed four younger children caught in a dangerous rip current. Without hesitation, Bryce and two others ran into the water to help, while others quickly alerted nearby adults for assistance.
According to his father, Shivy Brooks, Bryce never cried out for help for himself. Instead, he was focused solely on the children he was trying to save. In the chaotic rescue attempt, the strong current overtook him. Seeing Bryce struggle, a close family friend, Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II, jumped in to rescue him—but was also pulled under. Both Bryce and Johnson were eventually pulled from the water and airlifted to a nearby hospital. Despite emergency efforts, both were pronounced dead.
The news devastated the family, community, and classmates at Maynard Jackson High School, where Bryce was a beloved student. In his honor, classmates organized a balloon release, sharing memories and messages of love. His mother, Crystal Brooks, described Bryce’s bravery as him stepping into manhood, stating through her heartbreak that her son died doing what was right. His selflessness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Bryce was more than just a brave young man—he was a model student, known for making the honor roll, loving music, and being a part of the school’s fashion club. He also had a strong bond with his younger brother. The family had previously gained national attention when they were featured on Netflix’s “Instant Dream Home”, where their house was renovated as a surprise. That moment of joy now stands in contrast to the profound grief they’re experiencing.
Support poured in from across the country. Education organization “Get Your Teach On” started a fundraiser for the Brooks family that raised over $78,000. Organizers and donors praised Bryce’s actions, acknowledging the lives that were saved because of his incredible bravery. They emphasized how one young person’s decision to act selflessly made a lasting difference.
To honor his legacy, the family created the Bryce Brooks Foundation, which promotes water safety and drowning prevention. The foundation provides free swimming lessons and scholarships for lifeguard certification. Its first six scholarships were recently awarded—including one to Uncle Chuck’s son—ensuring Bryce’s courage continues to inspire and save lives for years to come.
