Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspect accused of assassinating conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, had reportedly become increasingly political in recent years, expressing strong negative views about Kirk. According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Robinson had discussed Kirk’s appearance at Utah Valley University (UVU) with family members, stating that he believed Kirk was “full of hate and spreading hate.” These statements were made in the days leading up to the fatal shooting on September 10, 2025.
During a Friday press conference, Gov. Cox and the FBI detailed Robinson’s movements and clothing on the day of the assassination. Surveillance footage showed Robinson arriving at UVU in a gray Dodge Challenger. He was wearing a maroon T-shirt, light-colored shorts, and a black hat—clothing that matched what he was wearing when arrested. Investigators also recovered a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel and discovered unfired bullet casings engraved with disturbing messages such as “Hey, fascist! Catch!” and symbolic arrows, which may have ideological meaning.
A crucial turning point in the investigation came when Robinson’s father recognized him from FBI-released surveillance images. Acting swiftly, the father contacted a local pastor, who then alerted the U.S. Marshals. Robinson was taken into custody without resistance. Law enforcement officials indicated that Robinson has since been read his rights, and preparations are underway for formal charges and prosecution.
Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker said on CNN that now the focus will shift from the manhunt to building a solid legal case. Forensic evidence is being matched to Robinson, including items recovered at the scene and digital devices seized during a search of his home. Investigators are also examining his online activity, including Discord conversations and past communications, to establish motive and premeditation.
Governor Cox noted that Robinson’s radicalization had been observed by his family for some time. His dislike for Kirk, particularly for his political views, appears to have motivated the attack. The case is expected to move forward with state-level murder charges, and prosecutors will likely seek the maximum penalty under Utah law.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump expressed his sorrow over Kirk’s death and vowed that Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk founded, will continue its mission. Trump mentioned that he had spoken to Kirk’s grieving wife and stated there’s strong support to keep the organization alive and focused on mobilizing young voters.
