We often think of washing machines as tools for cleaning clothes, but they’re capable of so much more. Many household items we use daily collect dirt, bacteria, and dust without us noticing — and most of them are perfectly safe to clean in the washing machine. With a little care, you can use your washer to help maintain hygiene and freshness throughout your home.
Items like oven gloves and dishcloths are in constant contact with grease and food residue. To eliminate bacteria and odors, wash them weekly at 60°C. Microfiber mops and cleaning cloths are other hidden offenders. If not cleaned properly, they end up spreading grime instead of picking it up. Washing them at 60°C helps keep them absorbent and effective.
Canvas and tote bags, which we carry everywhere, trap dirt and dust. A gentle wash at 30–40°C works well—just place them in a pillowcase for extra protection. Shower curtains and bath mats thrive in warm, damp environments, making them breeding grounds for mold. A 40°C wash with a splash of white vinegar will disinfect and deodorize them easily.
Even soft items like stuffed animals and comforters, which are frequently touched or cuddled, can harbor bacteria. Use a laundry net and wash at 30–40°C with white vinegar to clean gently without damage. Canvas sneakers that have become dingy can also go in the machine — just remove laces and insoles, toss in a towel to balance the load, and use a 30°C cycle with mild detergent.
Lastly, don’t forget about sports accessories such as gym bags and wristbands. These absorb sweat and need regular cleaning to stay fresh. Wash them at 30°C and air dry to maintain shape and durability. For all items, remember to sort by material, use appropriate temperatures, avoid fabric softener on absorbent items like microfiber, and protect delicate items with laundry nets.
