Doctors warn against beauty trend that causes reptile skin

Mesotherapy, a cosmetic procedure dating back to the 1950s, is experiencing a surprising revival in the beauty world. Originally developed to treat pain, it now claims to fix under-eye bags, wrinkles, and stubborn fat. This technique involves injecting a cocktail of vitamins, enzymes, and plant extracts into the skin. Despite its promises, doctors are warning that mesotherapy can cause serious and irreversible damage — including scarring, infections, and even blindness.

One major concern is the growing popularity of DIY mesotherapy. Social media influencers have helped normalize the treatment, showcasing “instant” results and affordable kits available online for as little as $45. However, experts warn that these home procedures are dangerously misleading. The under-eye area is especially delicate, and injecting unregulated substances without proper medical training can lead to devastating outcomes. Raised welts, swelling, and a lumpy “reptile skin” texture are only the beginning of the risks.

Another serious issue lies in the lack of regulation. Unlike FDA-approved treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers, mesotherapy has no standardized formula. Each provider mixes their own blend — sometimes using prescription drugs or questionable substances. Doctors liken this to the unregulated supplement market, where consumers may not know exactly what they’re putting into their bodies. This opens the door to infections, allergic reactions, and granulomas — painful tissue masses caused by immune responses.

Despite these warnings, mesotherapy continues to be marketed as a quick, non-invasive beauty solution. But the trade-offs are significant. Long-term complications, especially around the eyes, can permanently alter a person’s appearance and even affect their vision. Experts urge consumers to be cautious and seek guidance from qualified dermatologists or cosmetic professionals before undergoing any type of injectable treatment.

Fortunately, there are safer alternatives to mesotherapy for those wanting to improve under-eye appearance. Options like caffeine-infused eye creams, cold compresses, healthy lifestyle changes, and professional treatments such as laser therapy or chemical peels can offer effective results without the same level of risk. In a beauty culture that rewards speed and perfection, it’s essential to prioritize safety and science over hype and shortcuts.
